Gilgamesh is an ancient Sumerian legend. The National Endowment for the Arts awarded Short Center Repertory a grant to create a new version that would oppose the two main charters in conflicting linguistic worlds: the dominant speaking world of Gilgamesh and the empathic world of the Deaf represented by Enkidu. The original script by Rick Foster premiered in 2007.
The life of Helen Keller, rendered Blind and Deaf by childhood illness, forefronts the tensions and choices facing a family dealing with disability. Short Center Repertory cast actors with and without disabilities to explore this dynamic in a profound way.
In 2006 the Short Center Rep. created an evening of wildly different comedies by the American playwright David Ives that also featured American Sign Language actors as a fully integrated presence in the stage performance.
